GENERALS DROWN IN GOAL DELUGE

(Match report by Dan Cashion.)

‘Blustery conditions’ doesn’t quite do the weather justice for the game against General at Sea this weekend….the last game of the calendar year, no less. Slightly nervous with a last minute 11 (+1), we attempted to settle early for a game of chess rather than checkers against our old rivals (currently 2nd in the league). After 10 minutes, we had a neat pass turned into first time flick over the top for Dan Cashion to run from the halfway line all the way to the box, only to send a shot sparingly wide. Pressure was put on by both sides, and an eventual free kick was handed to our left wing, Jake Morrison, whose cross-cum-shot was spilled into the net by the opposing goalie to give us a 1-0 lead. The minutes following the goal leaned towards the tense side, with a number of Knights players having to laugh off ‘optimistic’ challenges from the opposition.

The 2nd half commenced, with the wind now favouring the Generals, and a sterner test was sure to face our interim goalie; Bristow, who’d put up a near perfect performance when called upon in the first. Pressure was mounting as the opposition attempted a number of balls both short and over the top but our stellar defensive line held firm and a good passage of passing play found itself at Chris McCann’s feet who calmly slotted our 2nd home. We maintained our 2 goal advantage and continued to counter well, and a great long ball from.the centre midfield found Cashion again who drew a penalty….the result….McCann now had his 2nd of the match. 3 minutes later, an overlap.from left back Adam.Challis saw him skip past two defenders and curl arguably the best goal of the game into the top right corner…4-0, 30 seconds to play, job done. The best game I’ve witnessed and been part of for the Knights, truly a great way to sign off 2015.
